Why You Should Start Cleansing with Honey - Fresh New Routine

Out of all the natural ingredients I use in my skin care routine, one I’m most excited for is cleansing with honey. This golden gooey substance has hidden benefits far beyond sweetening up our food. Those little bumblebees work hard to fill it with all of the goodness that makes it perfect for using on your skin. Since I’m on the market for a good cleanser, honey has moved to the top of my must have list.

I don’t know why honey is so overlooked as a skin care product. Maybe it’s because there’s no marketing team dedicated to honey and boasting all of it’s amazing benefits. But honestly, there should be! Mother nature provides us with the best skin care products around. I’d give her all my money if I could.

The Many Benefits of Cleansing with Honey

Honey and it’s amazing medicinal and skin care benefits are a tale as old as time. People have been using it for centuries. So it’s about time we all learn about it’s awesome benefits and start adopting it into our own routines, wouldn’t you agree?

Honey is Super Antibacterial

I recently talked about the pH of your skin and why it’s so important. Honey has a crazy low pH which doesn’t allow bacteria to survive in it. Depending on how it’s made (aka what flowers the bees use) it averages around 3.5 on the pH scale while bacteria needs closer to a 7 to thrive. Using it on your skin will keep your skin balanced and your acid mantle in tact to protect your skin from more acne causing bacteria.

Honey is Crazy Moisturizing

Honey is so moisture grabbing because it’s a super-saturated solution. When the bees make it, they mix a lot of sugars in a little bit of water. This causes it to constantly grab water from the air to try and bring balance out the sugar. That’s why honey is so perfect for dry skin, it’s going to pull moisture into your skin and keep it there, which is something we all would benefit from.

Honey is a Natural Antiseptic

This property makes it perfect for the most sensitive of skin. You can apply it to your dry patches and trouble spots without worry. It will soothe and heal your skin which is something we all need more of in our lives. I’m itching to cover my face in honey right now writing this.

Honey is Antioxidant Rich

We all antioxidants are amazing for their ability to neutralize free radicals. Which are the intruders in our bodies that cause aging and other not so good things. This makes it a wonderful addition to your routine to delay aging and keep your skin looking fresh and glowing.

The Most Simple Way to Start Cleansing with Honey

Let’s not over complicate things. The easiest way to start using honey as your cleanser is to simply put it on your face. It’s going to be sticky and messy but your skin is going to love it and honestly, so are you. The only guideline I have to mention is the type of honey you choose.

What Honey Should You Use?

Raw honey is hands down the only choice when it comes to using honey for your skin or food. Especially if you can buy it local, meaning the bees have harvested the honey from local flowers. This will give you a boost of benefits that are perfect for your area (especially if you have allergies wink wink). If you want to do even better, try manuka honey. This honey is more expensive but the benefits are even more powerful for your skin and body.

Let’s Start Cleansing with Honey

Now we can really jump into this golden goodness. To start cleansing with honey, I recommend you wash your face off with some water before slathering honey cover your skin. Apply it like a face mask, making sure to cover all your trouble areas. Then you can jump into the shower and handle your business in there before washing your face off at the end. This will allow it to sink into your skin and also provide you with a mess free clean up at the end.

If you’re ready for expert level, you can just apply your raw honey to damp skin morning and night. Be sure to rub the honey into your skin in circles, this will give your skin a little massage and also work that honey into your skin so you benefit from all that goodness. Then just rinse off fully with cold water (to seal in the moisture) and continue with the rest of your routine.

Other Awesome Honey Cleanser Recipes

If you want to be a little more fancy, there are a lot of awesome DIY cleanser recipes out there that include honey. I’ve linked a few of my favorites below for you to try!

Honey Face Wash by Dr. Axe

Dr. Axe is a favorite of mine. He talks about so many awesome natural remedies for overall wellness. But what interested me most about this honey cleanser recipe was the addition of live probiotics. Those are going to be awesome for your skin because they’re going to balance out the bacteria and keep the bad acne causing bacteria at bay. It’s like superpowered honey (and that’s impressive because honey is already a superhero in my book).

Homemade Honey Face Wash by Live Simply

This recipe is a powerful addition to my favorite pinterest board. What drew me most to this simple recipe was the addition of castile soap. This natural cleanser is one I’ve always considered for my facial cleanser. However it’s more on the alkaline side of the pH scale so I’ve been wary. However the addition of honey helps bring some balance to this recipe and allows you to get the best of both worlds! I have plans to make this cleanser as soon as I get my hand on some local raw honey.

Green Tea and Honey Face Wash by Pins & Procrastination

This recipe caught my eye because it contained green tea. This will add some extra benefits to the wash like anti-inflammatory properties and the reduction of the appearance of pores. Who doesn’t want that? This recipe is going to be extra calming for those of you who have sensitive skin. Plus it combines a natural face wash base with some carrier oils and essential oils so it has tons of awesome elements your skin will love. Give it a try!

If all of this information doesn’t convince you to start cleansing your face with honey, I don’t know what will! The awesome benefits and smooth moisturized skin you’ll be left with should be reason enough in my book. I already plan on getting some local raw honey at the next farmer’s market so I can start using it as soon as possible.

  • Hey there! Question for you. So I personally love honey and I love eating it more than anything but as someone who is trying to go vegan, do you have any alternative options? I mean with all the benefits honey has to offer, I know most vegans choose not to use honey in their lifestyle.

    • I totally thought about that as I was writing it. The closest thing I’d recommend is oil cleansing. Especially because it’s such an easy thing to customize so you can get lots of great benefits depending on the plants the oils are from. If you choose the right oils you’d get a lot of the benefits that honey boasts!
